Steve's Story:

Staff Sergeant Steve Reichert served as a sniper with 2/2. On April 9, 2004, Mr. Reichert provided over-watch for Marines on patrol in Lutafiyah, Iraq. From the top of an oil storage tank, he spotted an IED planted in a dead animal carcass and called it out. Insurgents launched their ambush as Marines on the ground approached. Machine gun fire from a rooftop position pinned many of the Marines down, causing several casualties. They radioed to Reichert for help. He located the enemy machine gunner through the scope of his .50 caliber sniper rifle and pulled the trigger. His first shot missed. He made adjustments and fired again. The second bullet scored a direct hit, killing the insurgent and freeing up the Marines on the ground to move. Shortly afterward, Reichert fired an armor piercing round through a wall, killing another insurgent on the other side. His shots helped turn the tide of the firefight and prevented more Marine casualties. For his long-range role in the battle, Reichert was awarded the Bronze Star with "V". The official after action measured the distance of his first kill at 1614 meters, just over a mile. The incredible shot placed him on a very short list of snipers in history to make a confirmed kill from that distance. A few weeks later, Reichert was seriously injured by an IED. In 2006, after 12 years and 2 combat tours, He was medically retired. He now operates a private training company, providing instruction on weapons and tactics to the military.
